COTTAGE CHARM IN KENT
COTTAGE CHARM IN KENT
This project involved extensive alterations to an existing cottage located just a stone’s throw from the town centre, set within a Conservation Area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The brief sought to meet the needs of modern family life while respecting the cottage’s historic setting and the surrounding natural environment.
The renovation enabled the existing structure to be upgraded and modernized to exceed current thermal standards, improving both comfort and energy efficiency. At the same time, we carefully considered the architectural integrity of the original dwelling, ensuring that all alterations were sensitive and in keeping with its character. The goal was to enhance the home both now and for the future.
Key elements of the project included the creation of a part-two storey, part-single storey rear extension, a new porch, and the replacement of chimneys. Internal modifications to the ground and first floors improved circulation, functionality, and storage, while a relocated staircase became a central architectural feature. The bespoke timber treads, elegant oak handrail, and sleek metal spindles, complemented by abundant natural light from new conservation rooflights, now form a striking focal point within the home.
Further changes were made to the fenestration and exterior elevations, strengthening the connection between the house and its newly landscaped garden and courtyard. These modifications not only improve the flow between the interior and the outdoor spaces but also enhance accessibility to the newly created garden room.
This sensitive intervention successfully balances modern comfort with historic charm, ensuring the cottage remains a warm, welcoming home for years to come.
