FRAGMENTED OF FRISTON
FRAGMENTED OF FRISTON
A family fragmented by buildings that simply didn’t work for them have been brought together through creating a unique triple split level space providing ground floor social spaces. Additionally, it has created beautiful views across the South Downs to the coast through carefully placed low and high-level windows. In an area of outstanding beauty, an Edward Maufe designed (Designer of Guildford Cathedral) flat for a concert pianist in the 1940s over a garage was combined with the neighbouring stables and tack room by punching a doorway through the wall and wrapping a staircase around a modern new chimney. The artistic clients shaped a Mondrian inspired interior with a nod to the agricultural heritage of the buildings.
A further development to the site transformed a dark and inward looking bungalow into an extended family home. Outgrowing the space in the flat, the family had moved into the bungalow which was linked by an archway to the converted stable block. Through forming a galleried landing, breaking up an endless corridor, introducing lots of natural daylight and creating a new entrance area, a long chain of shadowy spaces became a naturally lit home with ample space. New first floor bedrooms providing a space for each child and allowed stunning views from the master bedroom to the Seven Sisters from a glazed Juliet balcony. The original front door was found in the exact spot of the newly appointed door!
